Initiatives

This page features a list of efforts originating from the Northern Rockies Training Center to improve or solve a specific problem in fire management training and development in the Northern Rockies Geographic Area. Initiatives listed here range from those at NRTC that are well established in the last year and have been implemented for several years to those that are still very much in the early concept phase.

Fireline Safety Officer class Class for personnel interested in acting in the roles of fireline safety officer or safety officer with type 3 organizations  Complete Complete On Going Mary Paul, SOFR cadre This class is not required to qualify in the SOFR position nor is the class recognized by NWCG. However it does present important skills that a Strike Team Leader (prerequisite position for SOFR) may not have encountered previously.  
Northern Rockies Leadership Program Program to establish subject matter expertise in NWCG Leadership in the Northern Rockies.  In Process None None Paul/Paige B. Miller,   
Center for Excellence in Leadership Training (CELT) Establish a relatively remote training location for presenting leadership classes. Classes utilize remoteness so that students have more interaction (less distractions) and also have learning activities that take place outside.  In Process None None Paul B. Miller   
Trainee Coordinator Establish a Trainee Coordinator for the Northern Rockies Geo Area. Coordinator would work in the Northern Rockies Coordination Center during fire season coordinating trainee assignments for Geo Area trainee priorities. In Process In Process None Paul/Rosie NRCG Ops Committee/NRCC Could include S520 candidates, students who've completed CIMC, S420 students and instructors, priority trainees currently working with IMT2s, ATGS trainees, FBAN/LTAN/SOPL trainees

Operations Section Chief to Planning Section Chief Bridge "Bridge" pathway for fully qualified OSC2/OSC1 includes successful completion of S440 Planning Section Chief and completion of the PSC2 position taskbook Complete Complete Future Date Established Paul N. S420F - Field-based Command and General Staff S420 class given in conjunction with an actual wildland fire being managed by a NoRox IMT2. Students attend classroom presentations and also meld in with team for a portion of each day rather than participate in simulations. Complete Complete On Going Paul Task group assigned by NRCG Operations Committee No fire opportunities for 2009 fire season in Northern Rockies. Type 3 Incident Management Organization (IMO3) Workshop Workshop allows for sharing of lessons learned, IMO3 structure, and plans. NRTC Extension and Continuing Education Extend the value of NRTC presentations through use of technology to provide opportunities for users to receive information and/or training from remote locations. Broadcast live NRTC offerings and portions of offerings via video teleconference or webinar. Make recorded sessions available to the web and/or via media available on request. Virtual All Hazard Video Game Encompasses one or multiple players for the purpose of enhancing decision making during an live incidents. Designed with the intent of reduction, mitigation, and prevention of fatality, serious injury, and near miss incidents amongst response personnel in All-Risk incidents including wildland fire. In Process None None Mary  Risa , B.
